About us

My name is Graham and I’ve lived in Sussex for all of my 60+ years. ‘About Turns’ started life as a dream for me. I have ‘played’ with wood most of my life. From constructing wooden furniture to building dolls houses to making and sailing large radio controlled boats; I have always had this fascination for things made from wood. I have recently become a member of Weald Craft which is a body of people, living in the Weald, that encourage all manner of local crafts.

Many years ago a friend gave me a large, very old lathe. This old lathe gave me another interest involving wood. I started turning all manner of things, bowls, candle sticks, salt and pepper shakers in fact if it was round and made of wood I would turn it on that old lathe. Sadly the old girl gave up the ghost but a new, smaller and better model was purchased some years later and wood turning became a little more than a hobby.

The pens that I now produce are all unique; after all, no two pieces of wood look the same. The pen kits are purchased and the barrels are turned on the lathe. Once the barrels have been completed the pen is then constructed and highly polished so that anyone purchasing a pen from About Turns would be proud to own one of my individual pieces. Should you require the pen to be given as a gift then a superb box can be purchased which would enhance the pen or pens. Whether it’s a fountain pen, a roller ball or a humble ball point skill and dedication is put into each and every item from About Turns.

A lot of the wood I use is sourced locally but some types of exotic woods come from as far away as America or Africa. Each item from About Turns will indicate what the wood is and where it was sourced. I have recently discovered Acrylic pen blanks which are a man-made product and can give stunning colours and different effects to the finished product.

Now, not only pens but a variety of key rings and some novelty items are also produced in my workshop.

Please browse this website and should you arrive at one of the shows that I attend, come along and say hello. I can talk as much as I can turn but always remember that the items I produce are unique, so no two items look the same. If you don't see what you are looking for or have an idea of what you would like and it's not on my web site I am prepared to take orders - just email me your needs.

With some of the pens I turn I use red deer antler - this is 100% naturally shed antler and is supplied to me by a small family business in Dorset called 'Staglers'. The antler is originally used as dog chews and are loved by our 'best friend' but I manage to use it on my lathe.

Should you wish your dog to try the chews go to www.staglers.co.uk
